This week we're taking a trip back to 1988 with “Two of Hearts” by Stacy Q. While the song was written as a fun dance hit about two hearts coming together, it reminds us of an even greater truth found in God's Word.
God's design for marriage has always been about two hearts becoming one in covenant — not simply sharing life together, but walking together with Him.
As we look at Scripture this week, let's discover what it means to become one flesh, one team, one direction, under one Lord.

The title alone gives us a beautiful picture of God's design for marriage. Two hearts joined together are strongest when they are united in Christ.
While the song celebrates two people coming together, Scripture takes that truth even deeper by revealing God's covenant for marriage.

❤️ One Flesh — God's Covenant
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
From the very beginning, God established marriage as a covenant — not merely a contract or a partnership of convenience.
A husband and wife leave their former families to create a new one. Two individual lives become one family, one purpose, and one covenant before God.
This has always been God's design.
🤝 Two Are Better Than One — God's Partnership
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up…”
God never intended one spouse to carry the entire load.
Marriage is designed as a partnership where each encourages, strengthens, comforts, and lifts the other when life becomes difficult.
One person may be tired today.
Tomorrow, the other may need lifting.
That's the beauty of covenant. Neither spouse was created to compete with the other or carry life's burdens alone. Together, they accomplish far more than either could alone.
🐂 Equally Yoked — God's Direction
“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.”
A yoke joins two oxen so they can pull together in the same direction.
Being equally yoked isn't about having identical personalities, gifts, or careers. It's about sharing the same deepest commitment to Jesus Christ.
When both husband and wife are following Him, they naturally move toward the same destination.
The yoke also reminds us that both are meant to pull together. One spouse wasn't designed to shoulder the entire burden while the other simply comes along for the ride.
Marriage flourishes when both hearts are surrendered to Christ.
❤️ Christ at the Center
When we say, “Keep Christ at the center of your marriage,” we aren't talking about simply inviting Jesus into the relationship from the outside.
Through faith, Christ lives within every believer by His Holy Spirit — the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27).
As husband and wife each pursue Him through His Word, prayer, worship, and faithful obedience, they naturally grow closer to one another because they are growing closer to Him.
This is the beauty of the threefold cord.
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
As two hearts are united in covenant and both remain firmly connected to Christ, their marriage is strengthened by the One who holds them together.

God's plan has never changed.
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife…”
Jesus reaffirmed that same design:
“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Marriage was never meant to become a group effort where outside voices replace or diminish the God-given role of a husband or wife.
Parents, children, careers, hobbies, social media, friendships, or any third party should never take the place that belongs to your spouse.
God designed marriage to stand the test of time because He designed it Himself.
